Chapter 11

Cal enjoyed cooking; she wasn’t a slave to recipes or the latest foodie fad, which was why she enjoyed living in Italy so much. Shopping in the markets, listening and half-understanding the gossip while other customers waited to be served, watching old women clad entirely in black carefully select exactly which piece of fish they wanted off the vast slabs of ice, or picking the one salad leaf they required - it always lifted her spirits.

The best time to buy food from the stalls, of course, was first thing in the morning, and Cal knew that she was running late. The best pieces of fish would all be gone, and she would be lucky to find any good vegetables. But she was in luck: as she walked back to her apartment, her bag crammed with meat and vegetables and herbs, she knew what she would serve for dinner. Chicken with wine. And, of course, it sounded so much more sophisticated in Italian.

She put the lilies she had bought in a vase on the antique bureau, and quickly spruced up the apartment, sliding the glass doors aside that led on to the terrace. She had discovered that no matter where you went in Florence, you were always assured of a magnificent view of the Duomo, whether you were at street level, or on the hills outside the city. But she felt, secretly, that her view was the best.

The beauty of her menu decision was that it required little prepping, and she was able to shower and change in good time before Lena appeared.

The phone rang just as she stepped out of the shower.

“Manda! Hi! You ok?”

“I just phoned to see if you wanted to come over? You seemed a bit down this morning.”

“Well…I.. Actually, I can’t. I’d love to but - ”

“Hey, no apologies. It’s short notice. And I’m really glad you’ve got a date!”

“I haven’t got a date,” Cal said quickly.

“Oh - I must have misheard the way your voice faltered as you tried to think of a reason why you couldn’t come!

“Manda - you’re impossible! Okay - Lena’s coming round.”

“Ah-ha! So not a date, more a get-to-know-you evening?”

“And no more than that,” Cal said firmly. “I’m still jittery.”

“What the fuck for? I can’t believe I’m hearing this.”

“Well, you know, I haven’t much confidence in my track record as far as relationships go.”

Manda paused. “Who said anything about a long-term relationship. Lighten up woman! Lena’s fun, she looks great, and I think you’ll have a great evening. Just don’t call me later and make me jealous, okay?”

“What would I do without you?” Cal laughed. As she walked into the kitchen she wondered about Manda’s love life. As far as she knew the glamorous photographer wasn’t in a relationship with anyone. Perhaps there was a significant other in New York, or Paris. But there was no hint in her apartment that her heart lay with someone else.

Cal pulled on her new skinny black jeans that she had bought in Rome, her matching strappy sandals, and a white sleeveless blouse.
